Properly Packing Antiques and Art for Self Storage
Antiques are innately intricate because of their age, so use extra caution when packing and storing these valuable pieces. Paintings and other forms of art also require the same amount of care. To maintain their value and integrity, here are packing tips to help you keep these treasured pieces in perfect condition during packing, transport, and self-storage:
Self Storage Prep And Packing For Antiques
A thorough cleaning is recommended before putting antiques into self-storage for any length of time. This will help prevent airborne dust particles and other allergens from settling and causing premature deterioration.
Cover or wrap antique furniture in a protective layer, such as cloth or bubble wrap. Store each antique separately so it doesn’t come in contact with another item.
Treat each piece with its respective treatment product prior to storage. Treat wooden antiques with wood conditioner, leather antiques with leather conditioner.
If possible, disassemble large, heavy antiques. Wrap all of the parts and pieces individually, but keep them together so it will be easy to identify and re-assemble.
Use hard plastic boxes for fragile antiques such as fine china. These provide better protection than using ordinary cardboard boxes which are easily crushed.
Do not fold antique quilts and other textiles. Instead, store them flat and cover with a cotton sheet to protect from dust. For pieces of clothing that need folding, place sheets of acid-free tissue paper between the folds to serve as buffer.
Keep antique silverware in a small wooden chest. This helps delay the tarnishing process as it limits exposure to air. A wooden chest with individual compartments for each piece is ideal to prevent scratching, but alternatively, you can roll each piece of silverware in soft cotton cloth.
Fine Art Prep And Packing In Self Storage
Wrap fine art and framed paintings with glassine paper to protect these from dust, water, and grease, then wrap each piece with a clear cling-wrap type plastic. Next, place a large cut-out piece of cardboard at each side. Lastly, use packing foam for added protection during transport and storage.
